Western Sahara conflict: AU Parliament Speakers urge for cooperation with UN

MIRLAND (South Africa), August 18, 2014 (SPS)- The conference of African Union (AU) Parliaments on Wednesday stressed the importance of cooperation with the United Nations to reach a settlement for Western Sahara conflict, reiterating support to the African envoy to Western Sahara, Joaquim Chissano.
 
The presidents of African parliaments, in a statement at the end of the sixth conference (August 13-14) at the Pan-African Parliament headquarters in the city of Midrand, South Africa, expressed their support to UN efforts and for a just, political settlement to Western Sahara conflict so as to allow "Saharawi people exerting their right to self-determination," Saharawi news agency SPS reported Sunday.
 
The statement reiterated African MPs' support to the AU envoy to Western Sahara, former president of Mozambique, Joaquim Chissano, the source added.
 
The AU conference was marked by a support to Saharawi people's right to self-determination and independence through several papers presented by the participants.
 
The Saharawi delegation to the conference held talks with the participating heads of Parliament and delegation chiefs. (SPS)
